| The North breeds a certain resilience into the people who call it home, and it served singer Jennifer Hanson well as she navigated the tough landscape of the Canadian rock scene with her band Jenerator as well as a back-up singer for recording artists Glass Tiger. Her torchy, seductive vocal style is among the finest in the current generation of jazz singers. She's definitely not just another voice in the crowd. Her first record, Something Cool, won a 1999 Prairie Music Award for best jazz recording. How the Night People Pray, Hanson’s latest recording was released in late 2005. The songs are by composer, musician, and producer Graham Shaw, one of Canada’s great artistic treasures. Their critically acclaimed collaboration brings together beautifully crafted songs, wonderful musicianship, and heartfelt singing that brings the stories to life. Now based in Atlanta, she works in the southeastern US with some of the finest local jazz musicians. Her repertoire runs the gamut from the jazz standard songbook to bluesy heartbreakers to some of the classic R&B tunes that audiences love. And if you tip her enough, she’ll probably play drums!
