The National Parcs With Devlin and Darko and Grand Analog • Monday, June 23rd • 10:00 pm • Pyramid Cabaret • $18 adv./$20 door Michael Elves: Did you set out knowing what sounds you wanted to record beats you wanted to make - or did you approach it more spontaneously and used what you got?
Vincent Lettelier: No! It was all improvised for the first drafts and then we would go back to the same spot and do overdubs of vocals or instruments. We just picked locations and ended up making one song per location (marsh, quarry, dense forest, a clearing). One thing that was ongoing from our previous work was that we kept the sounds in families; a song with log sounds, a song made with ATV sounds, a song with water splashes and, of course, a rock song! Michael Elves: Are there certain sounds or methods of sound that you were unable to record/use for Timbervision? Vincent Lettelier: We started exploring the echo of the forest too late in the process and realized it was the most amazing thing. We will definitely push the envelope next time around. And for the video portion, we would have loved some helicopter shots! Michael Elves: What are the influences behind the National Parcs? I hear straight-up spoken word as well as hip-hop/rap. Vincent Lettelier: The choruses are work songs, “Awestruck” is the most obvious example. Like the songs prisoners would make up in prison. The verses are very hip-hop influenced rhythm-wise, but not lyrically. Our subjects and metaphors are alien to mainstream hip-hop culture and that maybe why we are not easily pigeonholed. Our sound is the sum of what we listen to: grime and hyphy, Malian blues, Baile funk, Kwatcha, delta blues and spirituals. Michael Elves: Are there albums or artists that provided inspiration for Timbervision? Vincent Lettelier: First of all, a lot of unreleased field recordings from Africa and the Michael Elves: You're playing a jazz festival - how comfortable are you with falling under the "jazz" umbrella? Vincent Lettelier: Our music is three main things: club beats, the Canadian fauna and flora, and soul music in all shapes and forms. The last category totally fits with a jazz festival. I hope we are welcomed! Michael Elves: What can people expect during the live show here in Vincent Lettelier: All we can say is that we invest a lot of time to make the show a full multimedia production. All the songs and visuals are revisited to have maximum impact and though there is a lot to look at during our performance, please do not leave home without your dancing shoes! Also, there are a lot hand claps on the record, so some clapping hands might also be useful! Michael Elves: What's next for the National Parcs? Vincent Lettelier: Touring Download “Awestruck” from |
