What happens when you mix two jazz players with heritage spanning from Chile to Russia? You get the magic and story of Jaime Carrasco and Jesse Krause’s ensemble. Join them for a performance of Chilean and Mennonite migrant stories that pays musical homage to Carrasco and Krause’s roots: updated standards from the band leaders’ cultural traditions with a distinctly jazz feel.
The Carrasco/Krause Ensemble is made up of Chilean born drummer Jaime Carrasco (Keith Price), vocalist/guitarist Jesse Krause (Riel Gentlemen's Choir), pianist Kevin Curtis (Papa Mambo), guitarist Victor Lopez (Papa Mambo), multi-reedist/flautist Sean Irvine (WJC/WJO) & bassist John Baron (FINN). They first came together to perform jazz arrangements of songs written by the Chilean artists/composers Violeta Parra & Victor Jara, plus arrangements of some Lutheran Hymns and Russian folk tunes, reflecting the backgrounds of the respective co-leaders of the ensemble, who had previously worked together in Flying Fox And The Hunter Gatherers. The group debut'd in January 2018 for Jazz Winnipeg's Nu Sounds series.
