Connor Derraugh Band: Ability
Thursday, June 21 @ 5pm
Old Market Square
With his first piano performance at the young age of 13, music has always been a part of Connor’s life. Despite suffering a brain hemorrhage during routine surgery that initially paralyzed his right side in 2010, Connor has overcome what could have derailed his dreams and is working toward a University of Manitoba Jazz Performance degree, majoring in both piano and saxophone.
Having headlined a variety of stages and even recorded music for film, he takes inspiration from other musicians who have overcome obstacles: “Even with the adversity these artists faced they found a way to make extraordinary music. You’d never know that they had challenges when you listen to them play. What does come out, however, is their story — it’s in their passion and the emotions they create,” he explains.
“The power of music and its ability to heal is an amazing force. Music saved my life and I don’t know where I’d be without it. This is the music that speaks to me and inspires me and I can’t wait to share it at the 2018 Winnipeg Jazz Festival.”
