In 2017 Oshawa-born R&B singer-songwriter Daniel Caesar had one hell of a year. Caesar's intimate, dark, and ambient-tinged soul made an immediate impression on critics and fans alike. His debut studio album, Freudian, earned two GRAMMY nominations; made numerous appearances on the late-night TV circuit; sold out five straight shows at Toronto’s venerable Danforth Music Hall; and his face was suddenly plastered on billboards, bus shelters and video screens above Yonge-Dundas Square. At 22, Caesar has become one of R&B’s most talked-about talents, even though -- or perhaps because -- he’s more of a classic soul man than a trend-chaser.
Following several self-released online EPs, his 2016 single entitled "Get You," featuring vocalist Kali Uchis, became massively popular, and racked up millions of plays and video views seemingly instantaneously. This was all a precursor to the success and acclaim that he'd garner the single "We Find Love" and that GRAMMY-nominated debut album.
Freudian showcases Caesar’s skill as a talented multi-instrumentalist (he plays guitar and piano), moving between the fullness of gold-toned strings and sparse melodies reminiscent of D’Angelo.
“People want to feel like they’re being heard,” he says. “So all the feelings and thoughts that we go through that are socially unacceptable, less than ideal -- if they can see someone else going through it, someone that they respect, then it makes them feel different about their own situation.”
