SHPIK

Sunday June 23 @ 3:15 PM
Old Market Square

FREE CONCERT

Comprised of pianist and composer Arnaud Spick-Saucier, contrabassist Étienne Dextraze, drummer Philippe Lussier-Baillargeon, and saxophonist/flutist Alex Dodier, SHPIK’s music evokes the great outdoors, self-discovery, and navigating between the immensity and the infinitely small parts of the universe. Their first album presents a puzzling trip full of theatricality. With their inspired effects pedals, SHPIK brings an aerial touch to the music.

Born in Quebec of French parents, Arnaud studied jazz piano at the Cégep de Sherbrooke and at UQAM. He was then accompanied by Étienne and Philippe, and they were ready to hit the stage as SHPIK. Alex joined the group a little later.

SHPIK creates bold and fluid music, full of soft twists and turns. Bringing a breath of fresh air to the music with their effects and inspired poetry, their sound is both blues-inspired and soothing, smooth and spirited. They put forth an accessible jazz without being cutesy, but one that is cinematic and experimental.

SHPIK’s first album, Fabulation, was released in November 2016. Active in the Montreal jazz scene, the band won the TD Jazz Grand Prize at the 2018 Montreal International Jazz Festival. Fabulation offers an intricate musical journey full of spirit and reflection, and promises more great music to come.
