Internationally recognized as a jazz pianist, composer, arranger, and bandleader of the highest order, Cuban-Canadian Hilario Durán has been based in Toronto for the past two decades, but his musical heart and soul have remained closely connected to the land of his birth. Durán grew up in Havana in a musical family surrounded by a variety of diverse musical influences on a daily basis.
Acknowledged as “an unparalleled pianist, composer and arranger of the first order,” Durán’s 2004 album, New Danzon, won the Juno for Best Contemporary Jazz Album of the Year. The next year, his album, From the Heart, was once again awarded the Juno for Best Contemporary Jazz Album, along with a 2007 Grammy nomination for Best Solo with his song, “Paq Man.” Durán made a triumphant musical homecoming on his latest album, 2017’s Contumbao.
The repertoire, in a quartet formation, spans the entire spectrum of Cuban music and delivers creative vision, expert musical knowledge, and respect for the tradition with an extraordinary collection of musicians providing an exciting artistic experience with an impressive dynamic range of different tempos, tones, and moods.
