The Bridge: Music for Life
Jazz Winnipeg is proud to support The Bridge: Music for Life, an innovative youth music program that brings together students from diverse communities to learn, create, and perform at a high artistic level.
Rooted in jazz education, mentorship, and learning by ear, The Bridge gives young musicians the opportunity to develop their craft through collaboration, creativity, and shared performance. More than a music program, it is a space for connection — where students build confidence, leadership, and a sense of identity through ensemble music-making.
“What you get is students from all over the world and we're all making music together. And once we have that initial success, they're speaking the same language.”
— Neil Watson, music intructor
NEW ALBUM RELEASE
“Project One World” by The Bridge
On Friday, May 1st, 2026, we are excited to share the release of Project One World a powerful new recording created through The Bridge program and released in conjunction with radio features and community celebration.
This album captures the spirit of The Bridge at its core: music as a shared language, built through collaboration across cultures, generations, and geography. Each track reflects the voices of students, educators, and guest artists working together to reimagine what ensemble music can be.
From global anthems to traditional songs reinterpreted through a student lens, Project One World is a living document of creativity in motion — shaped as much by the classroom as by the stage.
Featured collaborations include reimagined works such as Heal the World, One Love, and Pamoja (Together), alongside student-driven arrangements spanning jazz, folk, pop, and global traditions.
Together, these recordings form a portrait of a program where young musicians don’t just learn music — they help shape it.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Learning Through Music. Connecting Through Sound.
The Bridge program was created to bring meaningful music education into schools where students might not otherwise have access to it. Operating within Hugh John Macdonald School, students participate in ensemble-based learning rooted in jazz tradition, improvisation, and ear training.
Rehearsing twice weekly, students build technical skill alongside something equally important: a sense of belonging.
Through The Bridge, students develop:
Musical fluency and ensemble performance skills
Leadership and collaboration experience
Confidence through public performance
Cross-cultural understanding through shared repertoire
Mentorship from professional musicians and university partners
With support from visiting educators and musicians from the University of Manitoba and beyond, students learn in a professionalized environment where music becomes a tool for expression, identity, and connection.
“Music is an international language…We have students here that don't speak much English at all. But here we are and we're playing music.”
— Neil Watson, music intructor
