Alsarah & the Nubatones were born out of a common love for the richness of pentatonic sounds, shared migration experiences, and Nubian music culture. The Brooklyn-based group, fronted by Sudanese singer-songwriter Alsarah, has developed a unique East-African retro-pop sound, which mixes ‘70s-style pop with electronic and North African music.
The group released their first album, Silt, in 2014, with its single, “Soukura (It’s Late)” debuting on Spin magazine’s blog. It also went on to be selected by the prestigious Fact magazine as one of the best remix albums of 2014. Their second album, Manara, released in 2016, explores the many emotions and themes that mark the long journey after immigration begins and the ways in which we shift, change, and grow as we seek to build a new life.
