“‘Music is the Answer’ is one of the best albums of 2024, 9/10. This is a band you’re gonna have to watch, they’re gonna go places.” - Giggens

Casimiro Nhussi is a six-time nominee of the Western Canadian Music Awards and a Winnipeg-based African musician, dancer, choreographer, and cultural leader. He is the founder of the NAfro Band, Winnipeg’s only world music ensemble blending traditional African instruments with global influences to create a vibrant, genre-crossing form of world jazz.

A dynamic performer and visionary artist, Casimiro leads music that is uplifting, rhythmic, and deeply engaging - bringing audiences together through sound, movement, and shared celebration. His work weaves together rich textures of xylophones, mbira, kora, tabla, stand-up bass, African hand drums, horns, and acoustic guitar, creating performances that invite audiences to listen, sing, and dance.

Since 2002, Casimiro has been a driving force in Winnipeg’s arts community. Through NAfro Dance Productions and NAfro Band, he has spent over two decades inspiring audiences and fostering cultural connection. Today, NAfro Band has grown into a 10-piece ensemble featuring a three-piece horn section and musicians from across Manitoba, South Sudan, Congo, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique—reflecting the diversity and creative spirit of the province.

With new music on the horizon, Casimiro continues to expand his sound, reimagining African jazz through a contemporary lens while staying rooted in tradition. His work embodies a powerful blend of innovation, cultural exchange, and joyful expression.
